About the Brookline, Massachusetts Area

Brookline, MA wraps around the south and east sides of Boston. Considered one of the most picturesque small cities in New England, Brookline is one of Boston’s most popular and affluent suburbs. The city got its name from the many streams that form a natural border between neighboring towns. Its mature trees, green hills, ponds, and colorful gardens have charmed residents and visitors for generations. Money magazine recently named it one of the nation’s Best Places to Live, and one of America’s most educated communities.

Education is of primary importance to the residents, and test results show that students score almost 50% higher than state average. Newberry College has a pretty campus here, as do Hellenic College and Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. World famous Hebrew College is located in nearby Newton Center. The coming and going of students and faculty from around the world keep the atmosphere lively, and there is an excellent cultural mix of people and ideas. Crime is low, and the town population is about 59,000.

In Brookline you’ll find classic American architecture, with lots of gabled roofs, turrets, and two storey clapboard houses, mixed with multi-use properties and new developments. Brookline is a well educated community where the median family income is almost 50% higher than the rest of Massachusetts, and property values are almost triple the state average. President John Kennedy made his home in Brookline for a time, as did television personality Barbara Walters. At the beginning of the 1900s Brookline was even nicknamed “the town of millionaires”.

Culturally, there are over 6,000 restaurants within a 15 mile radius, over 100 golf courses, and almost 2 dozen museums. There are 20 ski resorts within 100 miles, and of course any major city on the east coast can be accessed within an easy day’s drive.

The economy of Brookline is based solidly in academia, healthcare, and finance, with retail and tourism following close behind.

TRANSPORTATION

One of the nation’s first trolleys began operation in the area in the late 1800s, and continues to be a key form of public transportation. Boston has an excellent public transportation system operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, known as the “T”. The trolleys, streetcars, ferries, and Amtrak trains play a big part in getting people around. Highway 9 is the main artery serving Brookline. Be aware that roads can sometimes be narrow or winding, originating from much-used colonial trails that are still in use. The average commute time is a half an hour.

Logan International Airport is only 20 minutes away, and is served by almost 40 different airlines.

HISTORY

Brookline was officially part of Boston only until 1705, when it was incorporated as an official town. It had previously been home to the Algonquin Indians until Pilgrim settlers moved in to farm the area in the early 1600s. Generations later, an evenly divided mix of European cultures live in Brookline, including Irish, Russian, English, German, and Italian.

Real Estate Tips
Curb Appeal >Upgrade Before You Sell

Real estate agents sometimes receive calls from homeowners asking for advice on what they should do to prepare their house to go on the market. They may have settled for living in a "less than optimal" circumstance for years, and are now going to spend money to make it nice for someone else to enjoy.

If you are considering painting, updating the kitchen, landscaping, or making any other improvements that will increase your home's re-sale value, think about making those improvements while you are still there to enjoy them. Create your own dream kitchen, master suite or spa, build an outdoor living room or restore your wood floors now. Improving your property will make your home more enjoyable, help maintain the property values in your neighborhood, and expedite the sale of your home when you are ready for a move.
